The week leading up to Easter is often called Holy Week. Last Sunday at Christ Church Kirkland, Marcy Willis shared about the sessions of grace provided during Holy Week and also offered many practicals for families and individuals to do in effort to prepare a somber poster of honor and respect and the joyous celebration of His resurrection.
Through Holy Week begin to read for yourself or your family the passages of Scripture that deal with everything Jesus throughout the week – from Monday – Sunday.
Monday thru Wednesday – Begin to read Matt. 21; begin praying together every night or morning for people to come to know Jesus that don’t; invite someone new over for Easter Brunch.
Give to the poor of your community during the week.
Ideas for family activities:
- Make a beautiful floral arrangement with the colors of Holy Week: Colors tend to be Purple for Royalty; then on Friday some change things over to Red to represent the blood; on Sunday the colors change to White to represent Resurrection. Let the kids help you with picking out the flowers and you can talk about what each represent as you make it together.
- Make Easter Cookies that represent the Season – there are lots of Cross cookie cutters; Flowers, etc.
- Make a Diorama with the kids that show the Tomb, Jesus inside, a big stone rolled in front of the opening until Easter Morning – somehow thru the night it miraculously is rolled away and Jesus is risen
Thursday: — when Jesus celebrated the last supper with his disciples – Either as a family or a Home Group, – you could honor that by having a Passover supper between yourselves, wash each other’s feet like the Lord did his disciples.
Friday – Go to a “Good Friday” service and celebrate together as a family the sacrifice made for us.
Saturday – Remember this is the time Jesus was in Sheol and took the keys of death away from satan (give each one of your kids keys, write something for them that the Holy Spirit inspired; wrap their keys up and put them in a beautiful egg) place on the dinner table for Easter Sunday.
Sunday – Resurrection Day – have a wonderful worship filled morning and give each other something meaningful (and of course, some chocolate!)
